The spring and early summer are very popular times to travel to Europe (and I don’t blame you). I haven’t been across the pond in a couple of years, but I’m itching to go, so I reached out to our beloved travel planner (Heather, I shared more about her below), when I started writing this post to begin brainstorming trips ideas — and to run my outfit recommendations for this post by her. So rest assured that these outfits are all travel agent-approved, AND they are stylish and comfortable. Whether you’re strolling the cobblestone streets of Florence, sipping wine by the Seine, or swimming off the coast of Capri, you’ll feel chic. Let’s pack your suitcase with outfits that balance timeless, comfortable, and picture-perfect.

The Best European Summer Outfits (for your perfect trip!)

What should you pack for a European summer vacation?

European summers are magical—but they can also be unpredictable. June through August often means hot days and cooler evenings, especially near the coast or in the mountains. Comfort is key, but so is style. Europeans tend to dress well (think elevated casual), so leave your athleisure at home and opt for breathable fabrics like linen, cotton, and lightweight knits.

My favorite easy European outfit idea is a striped cardigan (mine in the photos above is sold out, but this cropped cardigan from Quince is perfect for warm summers in Europe) and tailored shorts (also sold out, but these white tailored shorts from J.Crew are a great alternative). I also love the look of a knit maxi dress like the navy Tanya Taylor Miller Dress I’m wearing in the other photos at the top. While I no longer travel with only a carry-on, you’ll want travel-friendly outfits with versatile pieces that mix and match effortlessly. I have lots of other ideas below.

After I had written my initial draft of this post, I reached out to Heather, the owner of HC Travel Firm, to get her top tips when she’s sending clients to Europe (which is all the time). When you’re even thinking about a vacation, I can’t recommend enough looping in HC Travel. From the big picture to the smallest details, they make a vacation feel like a true vacation, and every trip feels seamless and special. We never plan an overseas trip without them. Never. She planned our honeymoon, our Ireland trip and our Dominica trip! And whenever my 40th birthday trip happens, she’ll plan that too, even if I’m 42. ;.) She was generous enough to offer my readers $50 off their travel fee when you book through her.

      Clothing Essentials

Here’s your Euro summer wardrobe foundation:

      • Linen trousers and midi skirts – Effortless and breathable for walking tours or dinners. I especially love this affordable pair of linen pleated trousers from Quince, or if you want to go the skirt route, this Sibel Linen Maxi Skirt from Few Moda is perfect.
      • Cotton button-downs and breezy blouses—Tuck into shorts or wear open as a light layer. Quince has an amazing selection of button-downs and summer blouses.
      • European summer dresses – Think flowy midi dresses, crochet minis, or wrap dresses for café mornings or beach sunsets. My favorite pick is this Miller Dress from Tanya Taylor.
      • Tailored Shorts – Choose a high-rise, slightly loose fit that’s not distressed. Tailored shorts are on-trend and incredibly chic, so lean into that. If you do opt for denim, make it a darker wash. I love this pair of stretch linen shorts from J.Crew.
      • Simple tanks and tees – Stick to neutrals, stripes or soft colors for easy layering. I’d definitely pack this striped Tuckernuck tee.
      • A polished pair of jeans – Perfect for travel days or cooler evenings. MOTHER Hustler jeans are my favorite splurgy pair and these Bella Kick Flare jeans from Quince are my budget-friendly pick.
      • Stunning but simple swimsuits – Flattering one-pieces or high-waisted bikinis in solid colors or minimal prints that look effortlessly chic at any beach or pool. I love this Style by Simpkins x Dillards collaboration bikini, especially for Europe! If you’re heading to a beach resort, check out my resort wear favorites blog post.

Heather’s Pro Tips: Prepare for serious heat. European summers—especially in Southern Europe—are hotter than you think, often without the luxury of strong A/C. Think lightweight, breathable fabrics like linen and cotton, avoid anything tight or synthetic, and always pack a hat, sunglasses, and a refillable water bottle. You’ll thank yourself by midday. Worried about what to wear? Do a little IG research. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, check out the tagged photos on popular restaurant or hotel Instagram pages in the areas you’re visiting. It’s one of the easiest ways to see what locals and other travelers are actually wearing. You might spot trends—like Brits going for bold tans and more statement looks—which can help you get a feel for the overall vibe. It’s a great way to pack confidently and feel like you fit right in.

Heather noted that you can always get laundry done at your hotel – and throw things away. “I’ve done a weird ‘hack ’all my traveling life; those socks or underwear you don’t love, use them on the trip and then throw them out! More room for fun stuff to bring home ;)” Brilliant!

      Comfortable but Not Ugly Shoes

Shoes can make or break your trip. With all the walking you’ll do, comfort is a must—but you still want to look cute in your photos and not stick out like a tourist. Here’s what works:

Heather’s Pro Tips: Stick to your tried-and-true walking shoes. Whether it’s Vejas, OnClouds, or another favorite, wear the shoes you know and love. Europe involves a lot of walking—comfort matters more than trends. Limit yourself to three pairs of shoes. If you’re packing light, go with sneakers (wear them on the flight since they’re the bulkiest), a comfy sandal for day or casual nights, and a slightly dressier sandal for dinners. Prioritize comfort over everything. A single great pair of shoes will matter more than your seventh cute outfit.

      Layers (Jackets, Cardigans, etc)

Even in the height of summer, evenings can cool off. Always pack a light layer:

      Accessories

The right accessories elevate your look instantly and don’t take up much space in your bag.

Outfit Ideas for 10 Different Types of European Outings

Here’s what to wear for every type of adventure on your European itinerary. I ran these outfits by my go-to luxury travel planner, Heather Christopher, and these all got her stamp of approval.

      1. Sightseeing major landmarks

Outfit: Linen shorts + cotton button-down + white sneakers + raffia crossbody bag

Why it works: Cool, polished, and comfortable for a full day on your feet.

      2. Café hopping / Food Tour

Outfit: Breezy knit midi dress + white sneakers + raffia crossbody bag + oversized sunglasses

Why it works: Comfortable for walking, polished for photos, and perfect for transitioning from morning espresso to a wine tasting.

      3. Exploring historic old towns

Outfit: Midi skirt with elastic waist + tucked-in tank + straw bucket hat + leather wrap sandals

Why it works: Easy to move in and perfect for those postcard-worthy alleys.

      4. Swimming in the Mediterranean

Outfit: High-waisted bikini or chic one piece + linen cover-up + leather wrap sandals + big beach tote

Why it works: Practical for beach clubs and transitions easily to a beachside lunch. Just throw some pull-on shorts in your bag as well.

      5. Visiting museums and cathedrals

Outfit: Lightweight midi dress + denim jacket + white sneakers

Why it works: Light and breathable for warm weather, modest enough for sacred or formal spaces, and the quiet shoes are ideal for echoey halls and high-arched ceilings. If you don’t have a denim jacket, pack some sort of wrap that can cover your shoulders if your dress is sleeveless.

      6. Taking scenic train rides

Outfit: Breezy trousers + double lined tank + cardigan + white sneakers

Why it works: Cozy and cute for hours on the train or café car.

      7. Shopping at local markets

Outfit: Flowy shirt style sundress + leather belt bag + wrap sandals

Why it works: Easy on/off for trying things on and great for walking.

      8. Dining al fresco

Outfit: Silk slip dress + light linen blazer + block heel sandals

Why it works: Elevated and elegant for that golden-hour happy hour and leisurely meal.

      9. Touring castles or palaces

Outfit: Cotton midi skirt + puff sleeve blouse + flat sandals

Why it works: Feminine, photogenic, and practical for walking gardens and halls.

      10. Biking through vineyards or the countryside

Outfit: Bike shorts under a puff sleeve mini dress + baseball cap + white sneakers

Why it works: Functional and cute for the ride—and the winery after.

Heather’s Pro Tip: Athleisure? Depends on where you’re going. While you won’t find a ton of athleisure in destinations like Italy, France, and Spain, it’s not as taboo as it was even 5 years ago. Especially in cities with college campuses, athleisure is no longer an odd sight (and all the American ladies say YAY!)

What Not to Wear in Europe

There’s no strict dress code in Europe, but there are a few things you’ll want to leave out of your suitcase—either for comfort, practicality, or simply to blend in a bit more with the local style.

      • Overly revealing outfits – Save the barely-there looks for beach clubs. If you’re visiting cathedrals, churches, or even some museums, shoulders and knees may need to be covered.
      • High heels – Navigating cobblestone streets and uneven sidewalks in stilettos is not it. Opt for block heels or stylish flats – like loafers or ballet flats – instead.
      • Big flashy logos or tourist-y graphics – Not only do they scream tourist, but they also make you a bigger target for pickpockets. Stick to simple, timeless pieces that don’t draw unnecessary attention. A good rule of thumb? If you wouldn’t wear it walking five miles or dining on a terrace at golden hour, leave it behind.

Europe in the summer is truly a dream, but packing the right wardrobe makes all the difference. From Capri to Paris, historic towns to late dinners outdoors, you’ll want versatile, comfortable, and stylish pieces without trying too hard. Stick to timeless silhouettes, breathable fabrics, and a few well-chosen accessories to pull everything together.
