Making the transition from corporate office to virtual coach?
After years of working in a corporate office with seemingly unlimited corporate resources, I made the move to becoming an anywhere worker in 2007. I started coaching from home and coffee shops using my laptop and a cell phone. I soon realized that I needed better tools. Here are my favorite tools as a virtual coach and anywhere worker.
1. Skype.
Most of us have used skype either in class or for personal reasons, but do you use it to it’s fullest extent for coaching?Initially, I use skype with video, as a way to build trust with my client. After the first session, I use it as an interactive tool to engage my clients. One of the benefits of Skype over a basic phone, is the ability to use chat. This can help when there is any confusion in what is being said. It can be use to share links or names or book title! The uses are only limited by your imagination!
If you are working as a corporate coach, you may also want to consider purchasing an online number. Some corporate clients are not allowed to use skype – the online number allows them to call you on skype from any phone.
2. Skype Recorder.
The power of now is never more evident than in a coaching session. Don’t allow yourself to be distracted because you need to take notes. Stay focused in the moment with your client, knowing that your call is being recorded for future reference if necessary. It is also a great tool to use with your coach – to observe and develop your coaching skills.
3. Quality Headset with Mic.
Eliminate distractions and send your voice across with confidence using a quality headset and mic. Your voice is your primary means of communicating with your client. Hearing your client’s voice (tone, pitch, silence between the words) is the key to powerful coaching.
4. Dropbox File Sharing.
Whether you are sharing a strengths survey report, a coaching tool, or fieldwork with your client, sharing files can often be a challenge if done through email. Dropbox allows you to share files of any type and size in a secure folder.
I create a folder for each client, providing permission only to myself and that client. The basic plan is free and allows for 2GB storage (you can earn more by inviting friends!) Even with your thriving coaching business, keeping only current clients’ folders on dropbox will allow you to use the free version.
With these tools, virtual coaching becomes more about the coaching and less about the obstacles we face as anywhere workers in different locations.
